To quote Clarkson, “My car has caught fire, but in a very specific place.” This was not external, and the heated seat was on. Methinks I have a nasty short.
EDIT: This has since been fixed.

Did you have the heated seat set to "lightly toasted"?

That's slightly terrifying.

What model is that? So, of course, I know what to avoid.

I remember seeing news of someone's seats burning up. Thankfully, mine hasn't.

.......trying SUPER hard to not make a really tasteless joke at Germany's expense.....
Ehrm.....uuuuhhhh.....you know any good upholsterers? Now is the time for a custom interior. I'm thinking crushed purple velour.

I had an old Volvo with heated seats once, I loved having them, but I was always a little nervous about something like this happening, so used them very sparingly. It was a combination of awareness of how often electric blankets catch fire, combined with how trashed the rest of the interior was.

I narrowed down a pervasive burning smell in my Toyota Venza last winter... the driver's seat heater. Not present with the passenger's seat heater, but the driver's seat heater would smell like melting plastic when it got warm...
No fire, no smoke... but I don't use that seat heater anymore.

It looks like you have genuine OEM Aftermarket AfterWarranty Heated seats, guaranteed to roast until you're toast. Does it come with the available carcinogenic funny fumes?
Honestly, you probably just had a wiring smoke leak, just get a replacement from Lucas.

With the reliability of my electrics I think heated seats would be deadly for me.

Worryingly, I've seen lots of cars do this, even Asian cars. I've seen the driver's clothes catch fire too. I don't know of anyone getting hurt, but it's gotten close I would think. A lot of times dealers will cover the damage because it's a scary thing to have happen and they would rather avoid the publicity and recalls that might go along with this sort of thing.

If my car were anywhere near new enough I'd take it to the dealer and make them fix it.

Yes it does.

It wouldn't hurt to try. I've seen them take care of older cars too.
